I put the camera down for the day to enjoy the simpleness of life. That is why there are no pictures for this blog entry.
I have been alive 30 years for ten days now. I have always made others’ 30th birthdays out to be grandiose days; a day full of surprises, activities, and beers (respectfully). However when my birthday rolled around on April 19th the only plans I had for the day were to go climbing in the morning and later that evening get some craft cocktails with one close girlfriend.
It was a bluebird day and the temperature was perfect. At 10:30am I went rock climbing at the crag downtown. My climbing partner was a friend who I have known for a decade now and has helped me make some dreams come to a reality. I truly love her. After climbing for two hours she treated me to a beer while we chatted about life. After that I met up with a few friends who gave me a celebratory shot of moonshine and a very delicious edible. After that another very close girlfriend came by my house and we sat with my dog outside on the grass and drank pinot noir. Time was not important, until we realized it may be later than we think. As I walked over to check the time, my girlfriend shouts “4:15!” No kidding you, it was exactly 4:15. The day was just in rhythm with me. It was the way I hope everyday could be. We then had our manicure and pedicure appointment with my sister, mom, and niece at 5pm. After getting pampered we went out for some Mexican food. I was completely blown away by our server in the best way possible. This gentleman gave us the most wonderful service I have ever received in all of the times I have been to a restaurant. He anticipated my needs before I knew I had them. He did this by bringing out four large romaine lettuce leaves for the fajita I was enjoying when he found out I am vegan. He did this without even asking me. He said his babysitter is vegan and that what she does. I do it too but did not realize it was an option. My girlfriend and I then were heading back to get ready for our date together to get some craft cocktails. As we were driving back to her house we gave one look to each other and knew we were just going to end up drinking at my house and playing board games. We know each other well! We ended up going to get some whiskey on the way home and ended up playing banana grams. Her fiancé came over a couple hours later then my boyfriend got home not too far behind and we all drank and played banana grams. Oh, and of course I ate the edible.
Both my day and my night for celebrating my 30th was something I could not have scripted. Letting the day take me where it wanted was freeing. It also was a day full of laughter, hugs, and fun. I wonder how much better and less stressful things would happen if every day was like my birthday. And not in a “it-is-all-about-me-day,” but more of letting those 1440 minutes just be.
